first time at the berlinale, february 2020

biting the bullet...

sunny

As an avid film goer, and a festival lover, the Berlinale has long been on my list, but I've put off going for a number of reasons.
Mainly I dont speak German, Berlin is a huge city, and I dont want to travel on the underground!
However, life is short and as I travel more, my confidence grows...
I've been back to Berlin since returning to London in 2014, and loved it.
Time to bite the bullet...

As a frequent traveller, not many days go by when I'm not thinking about where to go next, scanning cheap deals on EasyJet and BA, pouring over airbnb's in exotic locations...

Trips usually start with an idea, then once I get going theres no stopping me.
I started looking at going to the Berlinale by searching for an airbnb, after checking the dates of course!
I found a great place near to a section of the wall, in fact I could visualise it from my previous visit, and then a cheap flight.

I was very happy that I managed to navigate the complex website rel to getting film tickets and when they were released I got some! This is always a major issue when booking film festivals as without the tickets to films its kind of pointless going (obviously), but most festivals issue the tickets very close to the start date so you have to book it all and hope for the best.

As all the films are new it doesnt matter which ones you go to really, but I usually choose subjects that I find interesting, directors I know, or actors I admire. I also like to see some episodes of series if there are any. Most important criteria for me is when they are showing as this makes all the difference to the enjoyment of each film. I have learnt over time that film festivals over run and can be chaotic and that tends towards some confusion.

I try to choose films with a good gap between them, for navigating from theatre to theatre and allow for q+a's to overrun. In Venice films never start on time!

As this is Germany, I expected it to be more organised...

Once I'd got accommodation, flight and tickets sorted, there was only getting around in Berlin to sort, I also thought it would be nice to do something else while I was there, so booked an airbnb experience, a history walk around some of the main sights.
